The Role of Contact Area Spread Rate in Haptic Discrimination of Softness

چکیده
Many applications in teleoperation and virtual reality call for the implementation of e ective means of displaying to the human operator information on the softness and other mechanical properties of objects being touched. The ability of humans to detect softness of di erent objects by tactual exploration is intimately related to both kinesthetic and cutaneous perception, and haptic displays should be designed so as to address such multimodal perceptual channel. Unfortunately, accurate detection and replication of cutaneous information in all its details appears to be a formidable task for current technology, causing most of today's haptic displays to merely address the kinesthetic part of haptic information. In this paper we investigate the possibility of surrogating detailed tactile information for softness discrimination, with information on the rate of spread of the contact area between the nger and the specimen. Devices for implementing this new perceptual channel are described, and some preliminary psychophysical test results are reported, validating the e ectiveness and practicality of the proposed

متن کاملTactile Flow and Haptic Discrimination of Softness
Haptic perception involves both cutaneous perception, through mechanoreceptors lying on the skin, and kinaesthetic perception mediated by the position of the fingers. Analogously, artificial devices should replicate both these perceptual channels, as well. While kinesthetic information is satisfactorily replicated by current technology, cutaneous information is still a challenging task to be pr...
متن کاملA New Softness Display Interface by Dynamic Fingertip Contact Area Control
A new softness display system has been developed which controls the fingertip contact area dynamically according to the detected contact force, based on the human softness recognition mechanism. The relative softness cognitive rate of four levels softness using the developed system was 98 percent while ten volunteers touched the device actively. The absolute softness cognitive rate, the rate of...
متن کاملReal-time area-based haptic rendering and the augmented tactile display device for a palpation simulator
Although people usually contact a surface with some area rather than a point, most haptic devices allow a user to interact with a virtual object at one point at a time and likewise most haptic rendering algorithms deal with such situations only. In a palpation procedure, medical doctors push and rub the organ’s surface, and are provided the sensation of distributed pressure and contact force (r...
متن کاملSoftness Haptic Display Device for Human - Computer Interaction
In the field of virtual reality and teleoperation, haptic interaction between human operator and a computer or telerobot plays an increasingly important role in performing delicate tasks, such as robotic telesurgery, virtual reality based training systems for surgery, virtual reality based rehabilitation systems (Dario et al, 2003) (Taylor, Stoianovici, 2003) (Popescu, et al, 2000), etc. These ...
